Instagram post 18043084774219539 There isn’t much room for this idea of “balance” in our current workplaces. We can’t separate and compartmentalize our work lives from our home lives truly. Especially not when your boss is emailing you, texting you, and calling you at all hours of the day and night. Makes it a little difficult to leave the office at the office, right? The old adage of being the first one to work and the last one to leave to prove your value, has only gotten worse with the timestamps of the 3am emails. Instead we need to shift our workplaces to the idea of work-life integration. Where our work lives and home lives aren’t just balanced but instead integrated. Where we embrace technology and its benefits, such as being able to work from anywhere, anytime. Meaning that when life crops up during the regular “work hours” it’s okay to take care of life demands, and it’s also okay to have some work crop up in our normal “home hours”. We have to get rid of this idea of on the clock and off the clock (SORRY HR PERSON – I KNOW YOU WANT TO KILL ME). But instead focus on getting the work done, and getting it done well. . They learned from the lack of quality time that they got with their own parents, and decided they wanted different. . And now here we are, Millennials and more and more Gen Z, being faced with a totally different workplace. One where we’re never really “off the clock” because of those beautiful smart phones attached to our hands 24/7. One where it’s no longer realistic for most families to prosper off of one income, meaning both parents are generally working. We no longer have what Heather Boushey coined as the hidden subsidy, “The American Wife”. . We work to live, we don’t live to work. These two right here are my main girls - and they deserve me at my best. That’s where work-life integration has to come into play. Who deserves your best?? . But then I thought, no, I love sharing my whole self with y’all and I’m super freakin proud of myself and all the hard work I’ve been putting in. . It’s not easy, and I don’t notice the changes every day, and some days my motivation wavers, and most days I annoy those around me with my “keto talk”, and I’m a weird @orangetheory fanatic now, but guess what else? I’m also incredibly happy, my energy is way up, I’m starting to love clothes again, and my confidence is growing as I learn the consistency and strength I have inside of me. . One of my weaknesses is that I’m always afraid I’m not going to be good at something I’m not an expert in. It keeps me from getting over the learning curve and I can give up too easily sometimes. While my physical appearance has nothing to do with my journey as a leader on the surface, it really has changed the game for me. I realize I can do things I’ve never been able to do and that if I really put in the work I can do anything. That confidence is crucial to growing as a leader. Don’t give up too easily, keep trying until you find what works for you. I am realistic with how many things I can get done in a day, week or month and know I can’t do all of these things at once. Instagram post 18078902698181167 Studies show that when you commit to someone else that you will complete a goal your odds of completing the goal go up to 65% – and if you actually make an appointment with that accountability partner your odds can shoot up to 95% probability! COME ON. How can you not take advantage of those odds?⠀ .⠀ But here’s the deal – you’ve got to pick the right accountability partner. First, you’ve got to pick someone who is great at the goal you’re trying to accomplish. So this was always my mistake in the past. Instagram post 18067605946174633 Every goal that we have has many steps we have to take to complete the full goal, so really sit and brainstorm all of the little steps it will take to get you there. With any goal, you generally are not going to be able to do ALL of your action steps at once. You need to look at all of your action steps and schedule them out, being realistic with how much can get done each day.⠀ .⠀ If you have a full day of work and then dance class for your daughter after work and you are responsible for dinner that night because your partner is out of town on business, don’t schedule action steps on that day. Be realistic and don’t overwhelm yourself!⠀ .⠀ And when I say schedule it on the calendar, I really mean it. Pick the time you’re going to do it, how much time you have to dedicate to the action step, and where you’re going to complete the action step. Instagram post 18116830966036886 This week for our #MONDAYMAGIC post, I’m sharing tools and encouragement on how to crush your 2019 goals - even in December! . First off, REASSESS YOUR GOALS! Goals are not written in stone. We learn, we evolve, our demanding schedules change – basically LIFE HAPPENS. I want you to take a look at your goal (or goals) that you’ve given up on and reassess. Did you give up because your goals were unrealistic or overwhelming? Did you give up because another goal became more important? . For me, I had many goals and one of them was getting my health back on track so I can be the best leader possible every day. I can’t be at my best when I’m sick, uncomfortable, sleep-deprived, anxious, or just unhappy with myself in general. It took me the first half of the year to really get a handle on my sleep and healthy routines, and it wasn’t until summer that I found a way of eating and an exercise routine that works for me. . Today when I took this #shamelessselfie, I finally can see a lot of my hard (mostly invisible) work paying off. I look like myself, I’m rested, I’m fitting into pants that I haven’t fit into in 2 years, and I’m excited about the work I get to do everyday. Had I given up any of the (MANY) times I got off track this year, I would’ve never made it here. . What are you going to recommit to this month to end this decade out strong??
